Springtime is indeed a busy time in the Yakima Valley and Union Gap. Perhaps you had the opportunity in late March and early April to take advantage of our blossom season as all the various fruit trees came into bloom, it really is a beautiful time of year in the valley.
On Sunday, April 24th the Central Washington Ag Museum (CWAM) is proud to host the 21st Annual Old Steel Car Show. They expect over 150 cars to participate. The show is on the museum grounds in Union Gap and runs from 10am-3pm. The featured car this year is a 1920 Maxwell. Maxwell’s were manufactured in the U.S. from 1904 to 1925 and were one of the top three automobile manufacturers during their peak along with Buick and Ford. Want to win a great selfie stick? Facebook, Twitter or Instagram #oldsteelcarshow and you are automatically entered to win a great one!
Speaking of car shows, be sure to join us at Fullbright Park May 21st from 9 AM to 3 PM for the 13th Annual American Truck Historical Society Truck Show - Yakima Valley Chapter - to see antique trucks of all kinds!
It is a bumper asparagus crop in 2016 and nobody is happier than Union Gap restaurants. Visit Major’s, Sea Galley and Los Hernandez Tamales for delicious recipes featuring fresh asparagus from the Yakima Valley. Los Hernandez has been fielding phone calls since late March wondering when their asparagus and pepperjack cheese tamales would be available (they start on April 23). Fried asparagus at Major’s is a seasonal tradition and is available at both of their locations. Sea Galley will serve up your asparagus just the way you want it prepared! And, if you want to purchase some delicious fresh asparagus, nobody does it better than Union Gap’s own Fruit City.
Play the Gap! is a new event the weekend of May 20-22 and will be held at Union Gap’s Fullbright Park. Billed as ‘music you grew up listening to’ the event features everything from fiddle contests to open jam sessions, plus a dance on Saturday evening. If you haven’t reserved the date already, do so now. While you’re at Fullbright Park that weekend, be sure to check out the Antique Truck show as well.
Soccer fans throughout the Pacific Northwest are very familiar with the Yak Attack 5v5 tournament. It is held at Union Gap’s Ahtanum Park and is one of the largest soccer events in the Northwest. In fact, it is so large, it will be held over two weekends in 2016, May 14-15 and May 21-22.
But wait, there’s more! Spring Barrel Tasting is April 22-24 and is one of the most popular wine tasting events of the season. Union Gap hotels are conveniently located near the highway so you can easily head to the wineries of your choice, and then return back to Union Gap and choose from our over 30 restaurants for dinner. CWAM opened all their buildings on April 1st and as always is FREE. Come tour the grounds and feel free to bring your dogs as there are acres of grass for them to run in. The museum was recently featured in Northwest Travel as one of the top ‘secret’ museums in Washington State and was also in April’s Alaska Airlines ‘Beyond’ magazine as a great place to visit.
We hope you’re enjoying a great spring, and if you happen to be swinging into Union Gap – we’d love to have you stay a while. Don’t forget, #oldsteelcarshow for an opportunity to win a selfie stick! We will announce winners after the Old Steel Car Show on April 24th.
